On
September 23, 2007, Amy Diaz won the title of Miss Rhode
Island USA 2008. The state pageant was held at Rhode
Island College, where fifty-seven young ladies were vying for
the title.
Amy
was born on August 6, 1984 in New York, grew up in Providence,
and now calls Johnston her home. A former Miss Rhode
Island Teen USA 2001, she is a proud 2001 graduate of
Classical High School . At the age of 19, Amy graduated cum
laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Communication
with a Minor in Psychology from Barry University, Miami Shores,
FL. In May of 2007, Amy continued on at Barry University earning
dual Master degrees in Business Administration and Sport Management.
Throughout her undergraduate and graduate studies at Barry University,
Amy always earned academic honors and was a recognized student
leader on campus. She is a nationally recognized President and
Founding Sister of the Iota Theta Chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma
Sorority and was the recipient of several leadership awards including:
Graduate Assistant of the Year, Greek Organization President
of the Year, Residential Life Hall Staff of the Year, and National
Broadcasting Society Outstanding Member of the Year.
Amy
describes herself as a zealous young lady with versatile interests
including digital photography, scrap booking, kickboxing, fishing,
and cooking. She is currently a yellow belt in martial arts and
is diligently training to become a black belt. Amy is bilingual,
speaks and writes fluent Spanish, was a trained dancer for over
12 years, and for the past 8 years has been a national commercial
actress and model for English and Spanish markets. She also enjoys
traveling, and recently she traveled to China to learn about
business practices and trends in several industries.
Amy
has adopted her sorority’s motto as her own Diokete
Hupsala which translates to “aim high!” Amy
aims high in all that she does while remembering to always “live
a life of love” ~Ephesians 5:2. Amy believes that “a
woman who serves is also a woman who leads” and serving
as a proactive Miss Rhode Island USA will enable her empower
herself and others. She is confident that she is intellectually,
physically, and emotionally prepared to assume responsibilities
of the title. She has worked diligently to earn and reach all
of her successes, but more importantly, she has worked twice
as hard to learn from her losses and mistakes because she believes
these are the reasons she has developed into a strong, passionate,
and accomplished young lady.
Amy
has been actively involved with several charitable organizations
such as the National Kidney Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters,
and AIDS Project RI as an HIV Prevention Educator. She was recently
employed as the first personal assistant to renowned tennis champion,
Venus Williams. Currently, Amy is an intern at the Rhode Island
Supreme Court. Her future goals and ambitions are to become a
successful attorney in the field of Sport and Entertainment Law,
and continue to positively serve and impact her community.
Amy
will represent the Ocean State at the 2008 MISS USA pageant next
